#13.009: Park(ing) Day 2013

Big Swing - Parking Day

Park(ing) Day, for the uninitiated, is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK[ing]” spaces: temporary public places. This year, in Cincinnati artists and designers are getting together to feed the meters and legally use parking spaces to celebrate the importance of public spaces. We’ll create some fun along Main Street in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati and in the 8th Street Design District between Broadway and Sycamore.

On September 20th, from 11 AM to 2 PM, the 8th Street Design District and the Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati will take over parking spots on East 8th Street between Broadway and Sycamore.  You’ll be able to take a seat and swing on the Big Swing; a collaboration between the Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati and local design shop, the Brush Factory. Take another kind of swing at a hole in one on GBBN Architect’s mini golf course and get your picture taken with the city’s largest liquid refreshment by KZF Design.

Park(ing) Day continues on Main Street during happy hour from 5 – 7 PM.  You’ll be able see how Main Street turns parking spots into galleries and stages with artists of all kinds. On Main Street north of 12th Street, Pones, Inc. is creating a temporary statue park, Permafringe is putting on a serendipitous performance in front of Iris Bookcafé, while a number of locations are offering mini-golf like you’ve never seen and Elementz is doing hip-hop dancing. Queen City Bike is planning a surprise and a bubble artist will delight everyone. Look for musicians and visual artists creating on the spot in numerous spaces, Carriage House Farm produce stand in front of Park + Vine. Coffee Emporium on Central Parkway is hosting its own sort of fun.
